雖然每個人的大腦都經由相同的發育機轉而架構、成熟,當面對相同的環境刺激,每個個體接收訊息的程度並不會完全相同,而這種差異最終會反映在我們對周遭環境的判讀及行為反應。我們實驗室即對神經差異性 (Neuronal variability) 的形成及其對個體行為的影響有興趣。

  果蠅嗅覺神經系統的區域中介神經元具有相當複雜的多樣性 (Diversity) 及差異性 (Variability),但我們對於這些細胞如何在發育過程中及個體成熟後達到其多樣性及差異性幾乎一無所知。在過去幾年,我們實驗室先建立了果蠅嗅覺區域中介神經元的標定工具及其發育圖譜,並建立了數套結合數學運算及機器學習的果蠅行為偵測系統。目前正經由系統性地研究區域中介神經元的發育、其如何選擇與特定的嗅覺神經元及二級神經元形成獨特的連結、神經訊號在迴路之間的動態傳遞以及其差異性對個體行為的影響,來瞭解不同個體大腦中神經迴路的差異性是如何造成的,以及其如何影響我們對外界環境的判讀。
